Beyonce's Lemonade which released back in 2016 references heavily many of the topics concentrated in RGTM. One of the biggest to be noticed is the creo/afro culture portrayed by Beyonce.
It starts off with a comment on New Orleans post-Katrina. Katrina itself is a whole topic in inequality between races. Beyonce is sitting on a cop car in high floodwaters. She starts off speaking on the background of her family her mother being from Louisiana her father Alabama and her being from Texas.
The video highlights African American culture in the states from long before to moments now. Even people not apart of the culture can see the many sides to a world not often visible to them.
She takes the social ideology of African American culture and challenges it. Basically giving the understanding to the audience that no this is what my culture actually is and it’s beautiful. The video shows different types of hairstyles known to be used by the culture and is all shown with such beauty and grace which in itself is challenging the social norms.
Beyonce also challenges gender stereotypes by the way she shows both genders. The biggest being how she shows females she portrays all of the females as powerful yet with having that balance of beauty which to other media its usually never combined.
Even after the video was released Beyonce was booked to headline the Superbowl. As she started her slot she began with Formation with that in itself was a huge moment especially for the NFL that has had and has continued to have issues with the African American community. The Anglo community and as well as the media were outraged by the performance. It basically shined a light into the community and the issues hit by the community as well as paying tribute to the people before her that were not afraid to speak out and something about it.
